4 Satin
Originally a silk cloth with warp predominating over weft. The weft is almost completely covered, giving a very smooth warp face. The best satin weaves are those in which the intersections are distributed widely and equidistantly spaced. Satin weaves can be made on any number of ends and picks above four, but the perfect satins, e.g., those in which the intersections are equidistant in warp and weft are few, see examples numbered 5, 10 and 13. The 8-end satin also has good distribution of the intersections. In all satin weaves each thread and pick intersects once only in each repeat. This permits fabrics to be made with a greater number of warp threads per inch than picks; or a greater number of picks per inch than warp threads. In both cases maximum smoothness of surface appearance is obtained, especially when the Schreiner finish is applied. A great variety of fabrics are made in the satin weave; silk, rayon, wool, cotton, flax, etc., are all used. Silk satins very often have a cotton back formed by using cotton yarn as weft. -

A standard cloth is made 39/40-in. finished with 62 reed, 56 picks per inch, 50's ground warp and weft and 2/100's satin stripe and checking. The satin warp stripes are crammed in the reed, and the weft stripes are also crammed. -
8 Satin De Bruges
A 16th century fabric of silk warp and wool weft in satin weave, used for upholstery. Sometimes linen weft was used. Originally from Holland, but in 1618 a French maker opened a factory in Lille to produce the cloth. Since 1760 this fabric appears as Satine de Hollande, also later on as Satin Cafard. By the end of the 18th century it was entirely displaced by the better grades of satin. -

14 Satin A Fils Tires
Silk satin composed of one-inch satin stripes separated by 6 or 8 thick cords. Used largely during the early 19th century for making head coverings as the material could be easily shirred by pulling the thick cords. It was invented by Tave, a Paris milliner.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Satin A Fils Tires
15 Satin Alcyonne
A satin first made in France over 100 years ago in the common 5-shaft weave, two-fold warp and single weft, warp and weft of different colours. Owing to the number of ends being twice as many per inch as weft threads, the fabric had a warp face of one colour and a weft back of another. The same cloth with single warp ends was known as satin de Chine.16 Satin Double Face
A silk fabric in satin weave made with two warps and one weft to imitate a double satin. Organzine warp and tram weft. Cotton weft is also used to cheapen the cloth.17 Satin Ecossais
An all-silk satin, formerly made in France with two sets of warp of different colours - one showing warp stripes on the face and the other weaving plain, weft colour bars as checks. The name (meaning " Scotch Satin ") was given because of the plaid effect produced.18 Satin Levantine
A strong and very thick satin fabric of French make. The warp is two-fold yarn, two ends together and a two-or three-fold weft is used. Finished with a glossy face. Woven in 8-end satin weave. All cotton.19 Satin Marabou
A thin, silk satin, made with single marabou yarn for warp in a 5- or 8-shaft satin weave, used for millinery.20 Satin Stripe Canvas
